Li-ion Fire Systems

With the rise in technology that uses lithium batteries, comes the added risk of lithium battery fires. How prepared are you for a lithium battery fire? The consequences of lithium battery fires are severe, so having the right precautions in place is critical.

AVD

AVD products utilize “Aqueous Vermiculite Dispersion” technology to rapidly encapsulate and contain lithium battery fires. The AVD liquid is applied via a hand held extinguisher sized for the risk.

The vermiculite particles within the mist are deposited on the surface of the burning fuel to create a film over the top of the fire. The film instantly dries and, because the high aspect ratio platelet particles overlap and bind together, a non-flammable oxygen barrier between the fuel and the atmosphere is produced.

This process has a cooling effect on the fuel source and, as the water content in AVD is evaporated, the vermiculite platelets begin to build up and the fire is brought under control.

Li-Ion Tamer

The approach to Li-Ion battery fires requires a multi-faceted approach depending on the risk the first line of defence is “Off-Gas” detection from Li-Ion Tamer.

Li-ion tamer systems comprise of off gas monitoring sensors mounted in the vicinity of the batteries, the sensors are connected to the Li-ion tamer controller which can give dry contacts and TCPIP outputs (via a module sold separately). The outputs of the Li-Ion tamer system are used to signal the battery management system to isolate the affected battery which in turns mitigates the risk of thermal runaway and ensuing fire.

AF-X Fireblocker

Once activated, the aerosol fire extinguisher initiate a reaction in which the released aerosol binds the free radicals.

This action extinguishes fire without depleting the ambient oxygen content. The solid particles of Potassium based (K) have a diameter of less than two ppm (parts per million) and remain in suspension in the protected room/enclosure for at least 30 minutes, preventing further re-ignition of the fire.
